Bonbon.ai Review: Who It Suits

Visit Bonbon.ai

What it is: a character-chat platform with image and video generation attached, running on a subscription plus a token currency it calls Bonbons. The character builder is the reason to be here, and it is better than what most of the big chat platforms ship.

Best for: people who want a character built to their own spec, and who like knowing what things cost before they buy.

On the free tier: there are no starting Bonbons, but you can use the base features for a run before paying, which is enough to browse characters and get a feel for the chat (and get images from existing characters too!). Premium is what unlocks unlimited messaging and the custom AI generators.

The Character Builder Is the Best Thing Here

Most platforms give you a gallery and call it a day. Bonbon gives you a gallery too, but this time the part worth your time is Create character, and specifically personality: you don’t pick a trait off a list, you combine more factors (starting from personality archetype, occupation, and your relationship to them) and the character comes out of that intersection.

A worked example from testing: archetype Ice Queen, occupation fitness trainer, relationship friends with benefits. Those three don’t sit side by side, they interact. You get someone whose coldness reads as professional distance and whose familiarity keeps undercutting it. That is a genuinely tailored character, and you didn’t write a word of prompt to get it.

Two more controls that matter more than they sound like they should:

  • The opening line. You write the first thing the character says. That single sentence sets the register for everything after it, and handing it to the user instead of generating it is the right call.
  • The scene. You set the situation the roleplay starts from, so you begin somewhere specific instead of negotiating your way into a scenario.

Beyond that the parameter list is wide: look, personality, interests, tone and background are all yours to set. If you have bounced off platforms where “custom character” means picking a hair colour, this is the opposite problem. You will spend real time in here, and it is time well spent.

The Chat: Fast, Configurable, Built for Momentum

Replies come back fast, the roleplay holds, and personality and writing style genuinely survive into the prose rather than every character sounding like the same assistant in a different wig. Characters also remember details from past chats, you also choose how long keep memory or cancel it.

The settings panel is deeper than most in this category. You get an AI Model switch between Flash and Pro, a Creativity slider with five steps, memory controls, and response-format options covering *narration*, senses and inner thoughts. That last one is the difference between a character answering you in dialogue and a character narrating the scene around you, and it changes the feel of a session more than any other single setting.

On pace: the chat leans forward. Characters are written to keep things moving rather than to hold you at arm’s length, which is exactly right if what you want is to get somewhere without a twenty-message warm-up. If you prefer a slower build, you are not stuck with the default: the scene setup and the opening line are the two levers that set tempo, and writing a restrained opener plus a scene with somewhere to go will pull the pacing back. The Creativity slider is worth moving too. It is a tuning job rather than a switch, but the controls are there and most platforms don’t give you even that much.

Images and Video: Priced in Bonbons

Both generators are real, and both are metered. Image quality is good, and it depends on which style you pick – realistic or anime.

Video does text-to-video and image-to-video. Starting from a still is the more useful of the two, for the same reason it is everywhere: you animate a frame you already approved instead of re-rolling the whole scene. Length is selectable from 5 to 10 seconds and quality from 512p to 1080p.

On speed, Premium delivers. The queue is short and the worst case, a 10-second clip at maximum quality, comes back in around two minutes. That is a genuinely good number for this category, where waiting five to ten minutes for a clip is normal.

What things cost:

  • Images: 3-9 Bonbons, depending on quality/quantity/format.
  • A video: 75 Bonbons at the short, lower-resolution end, and 100 or more for 10 seconds at 1080p.

That ratio decides how you use the platform, so it is worth a moment: one maximum-quality video costs about what 25 images cost. Premium’s included 1,000 Bonbons a month is therefore roughly 250 images, or about 10 full-quality videos. Most people land somewhere in between, but it pays to know which way you lean before the month starts.

Daily Rewards tops that up: complete daily tasks and earn free Bonbons, with a 30-day login streak board that pays a special reward at the end. At roughly a Bonbon a day it is about 30 a month, so treat it as a few extra images rather than a second budget. Some squares pay in cosmetic flair instead of Bonbons.

Pricing: Subscription First, Then Bonbons

Two things to understand. The subscription buys access plus a monthly Bonbon allowance; Bonbon packs are top-ups on top of that.

Premium subscription

PlanPriceBilled asSignup bonus
1 month$19.99/mo$19.99 monthly
3 months · 30% off$13.99/mo$41.97 per quarter+300 Bonbons
12 months · 50% off$9.99/mo$119.94 per year+1,000 Bonbons

Every tier includes the same set: unlimited messages, image and video generation, the ability to publish characters, 1,000 Bonbons every month, daily rewards, smart memory and faster generation.

Bonbon top-up packs

BonbonsPriceWasOffPer 1,000
1,000$9.99$9.99
2,500$19.99$24.9920%$8.00
5,000$34.99$49.9930%$7.00
10,000$64.99$99.9935%$6.50
20,000$119.99$199.9940%$6.00

Put the two tables side by side and one line falls out. The annual Premium is $9.99 a month and includes 1,000 Bonbons a month. The standalone 1,000-Bonbon pack is $9.99.

Same money, very different deal. For that $9.99 you either get 1,000 Bonbons, or you get 1,000 Bonbons plus unlimited messages, image and video generation, smart memory, faster generation, daily rewards, character publishing, and a 1,000-Bonbon signup bonus on top. If you are going to spend anything at all here, the annual plan is the purchase, and it is the best-value tier on the page by a wide margin.

The pack ladder above that is priced sensibly: $6.00 per 1,000 at the 20,000 pack is a real 40% off the entry rate, and the curve tightens smoothly instead of saving all the discount for a tier nobody buys. If you generate video regularly you will want top-ups, and 10,000 for $64.99 is the sweet spot on rate.

Pros and Cons

✔️ More-factor combined for character personalities.
✔️ Fast replies and personality and writing style.
✔️ Unusually deep chat settings.
✔️ Image-to-video as well as text-to-video.
✔️ Annual Premium at $9.99/month costs the same as the Bonbons it includes.
✔️ Crypto payment alongside card.
✔️ Daily Rewards for free bonbons across months.

Video is quite the expensive half
The chat sometimes leans forward rather than slow-burn.

Verdict

Bonbon earns its place on the character builder. Crossing an archetype, an occupation and a relationship into one personality is a smarter idea than anything the big chat platforms are shipping, and getting to write the opening line and the opening scene means your character starts exactly where you want it.

On money, one rule and one habit. The rule: take the 12-month plan at $9.99, because it costs exactly what the entry Bonbon pack costs and gives you the whole platform on top. The habit: buy top-ups in sizes you will spend inside your subscription period. Then decide whether you are an image person or a video person, because 1,000 Bonbons a month will not make you both.

Bonbon.ai FAQ

Question:

How much does Bonbon.ai cost?

Answer:
Two things to pay for. The Premium subscription runs $19.99/month on the 1-month plan, $13.99/month on the 3-month plan (30% off, $41.97 per quarter, +300 bonus Bonbons) or $9.99/month on the 12-month plan (50% off, $119.94 per year, +1,000 bonus Bonbons).
Question:

What are Bonbons and what do they cost per image or video?

Answer:
Bonbons are the platform token. An image costs 3 to 5 Bonbons. A video costs 75 at the short, low-resolution end and 100 or more for 10 seconds at 1080p. That means one full-quality video costs roughly the same as 25 images, so the 1,000 Bonbons included each month with Premium works out to around 250 images or about 10 videos - not both.
Question:

Which Bonbon pack is the best value?

Answer:
Not the cheapest one. Per 1,000 Bonbons the packs cost $9.99, $8.00, $7.00, $6.50 and $6.00 as they get bigger, so the 20,000 pack is 40% cheaper per Bonbon than the entry pack. The sensible middle is 10,000 for $64.99 at $6.50 per thousand. Avoid the 1,000-Bonbon pack entirely: it costs $9.99, which is the same as a month of annual Premium, and annual Premium includes 1,000 Bonbons a month plus everything else. One caveat on the big packs - see the question about expiry below, because bulk value only holds while you keep subscribing.
Question:

How good is the character creation on Bonbon.ai?

Answer:
It is the best thing on the platform. Personality is built by combining three factors - an archetype, an occupation and your relationship to the character - so the result comes out of the intersection rather than off a list. An Ice Queen who works as a fitness trainer and is a friend with benefits reads differently from any of those traits alone. You also write the character's opening line and set the scene the roleplay starts from, and the wider parameter set covers look, personality, interests, tone and background.
Question:

Is the roleplay on Bonbon.ai any good?

Answer:
Yes. Replies are fast, personality and writing style genuinely come through rather than every character sounding alike, and characters remember details from past chats so a persona you return to builds history. The settings panel is deeper than most in this category: an AI Model switch between Flash and Pro, a five-step Creativity slider, memory controls, and response formats covering narration, senses and inner thoughts. On tone, the chat is built for momentum rather than a long slow build, which suits most people. If you prefer a slower burn, the scene setup and the opening line are the two levers that set tempo, and the Creativity slider is worth moving as well.
Question:

Does Bonbon.ai generate video from an image?

Answer:
Yes - both text-to-video and image-to-video. Starting from a still you have already generated and approved is the more useful route, because you animate a frame that already works instead of re-rolling the whole scene. Length is selectable from 5 to 10 seconds and quality from 512p to 1080p. On Premium the queue is short and the worst case - 10 seconds at maximum quality - takes around two minutes.
Question:

Do Bonbons expire on Bonbon.ai?

Answer:
They can. Section 4.5 of the terms of service says that if your Premium subscription expires or is cancelled, "any remaining Bonbons in your account may expire at the end of the current billing period," and advises you to spend them before the subscription ends. That applies to Bonbons you paid for separately, not just the monthly allowance - so buying a large pack and then cancelling risks losing the balance. Buy the size you will consume inside your current cycle rather than chasing the bulk rate.
Question:

Can you get a refund on Bonbons?

Answer:
No. Bonbons have no monetary value outside the platform, are non-transferable between users and cannot be resold or exchanged for cash (section 4.4), and subscriptions and virtual goods are described as "generally non-refundable once used" (section 4.8). The purchase screen repeats that they cannot be exchanged for subscriptions, refunded, transferred or withdrawn.
Question:

Are there free Bonbons on Bonbon.ai?

Answer:
Not at signup - there is no starting grant. You can use the base features for a limited run before Premium is needed, and Premium is what unlocks unlimited messaging. Beyond that there is a Daily Rewards system: complete daily tasks to earn free Bonbons, with a 30-day login streak board that pays a special reward at the end and marks any day you skip as MISSED. At roughly 1 Bonbon a day it comes to about 30 a month against a Premium allowance of 1,000 - around six extra images. Treat it as a retention mechanic rather than a meaningful source of Bonbons.
