OpenAI just announced a major change: adults will soon be able to use ChatGPT for erotica.
That’s a big, bold move! Because, up until now, ChatGPT has been quite restrictive in regards to users with mental health issues and how the platform could be used for adult content.
For instance, if you ask ChatGPT for erotica, whether you want it to create NSFW images or to say something x-rated, it will politely tell you that it can’t. It will then tell you that it can, however, help you with “romantic, intimate-but-non-explicit, or emotionally charged writing.”
But if you were hoping for the AI to help you get your rocks off, you had better look somewhere else.
But now, all that might be changing…
If you’re wondering what this means for you, for ChatGPT, or the adult industry as a whole, you’re not alone.
Below, we break down exactly what Sam Altman said in his recent announcement, and what it means for porn-lovers, porn producers, web masters, and sex workers everywhere.
What Did Sam Altman Actually Say?
In his exact words, Altman stated: “In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.”
While it’s unclear what exactly he means by erotica, he likely means using ChatGPT for erotic, adult-oriented chat or for generating custom NSFW images and videos.
And when he refers to age-gating, he means the way ChatGPT can accurately verify and confirm an individual’s age.
The problem, up until now, has been that OpenAI has trouble accurately verifying user ages. And there have also been concerns about how people with mental health issues may be affected by using generative AI, especially as a substitute for real-life relationships.
Despite not providing any explicit details, Altman claims that OpenAI has “been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues” that some users may have when interacting and building relationships with AI.
As Altman puts it, OpenAI wants to “treat adult users like adults,” which means allowing age-verified adults to use ChatGPT and similar generative AI tools for adult-oriented purposes, whether that means for porn or relationship purposes.
Altman clarifies: “We are not the elected moral police of the world,” meaning they believe that age-verified adults should be able to use ChatGPT however they see fit.
Now, rumor has it that the company plans to use an age-prediction system, where the AI will predict age based on how a person uses ChatGPT, which seems a bit risky. I mean, age verification without an ID check?
But OpenAI has also stated: “If there is doubt, we’ll play it safe and default to the under-18 experience. In some cases or countries we may also ask for an ID; we know this is a privacy compromise for adults but believe it is a worthy tradeoff.”
What Does This Mean for The Adult AI & Porn Sector?
The AI porn revolution has already been underway and there’s nothing really new about AI erotic chatbots or NSFW AI image or video generators.
But no matter how you look at it, this move opens a door for AI-driven erotic content creation.
And whether that means erotic AI chat, scenario generation, or image/video creation, it has major implications for practically everyone in the sex industry.
The adult market has always pushed for tech adoption.
First, that meant using camcorders and digital cameras to make x-rated films and videos.
Then, it was using the internet to share those films and to build entire porn websites.
More recently, the industry has adopted technologies like Bluetooth-enabled sex toys, virtual reality, and of course, artificial intelligence.
Now, for pornstars and production companies, all this represents a big potential issue.
After all, if AI can generate realistic x-rated pictures and videos, why would anybody pay an actor to take their clothes off?
Even more interesting are the issues surrounding copyrighted materials and how platforms like OpenAI train their generative AI models.
Technically, when a pornstar makes a video or does a photoshoot, they (or their agents or the production company) have exclusive rights over the content.
So, if AI platforms are browsing the internet and using the adult content they find to train their models, that opens a whole new can of worms around potential copyright violations and lawsuits.
Obviously, the full effect of AI on the adult industry has yet to be seen and companies like OpenAI are well-aware of the risks.
But either way, ChatGPT erotica will have a wide range of implications on the adult industry as we know, which leaves us both excited, a bit turned on, and mostly uncertain as to what happens next.
What Will Change (and What Won’t)
So, what exactly will change?
Well, since Altman has said that these changes won’t take effect until December 2025, for now, the details remain murky surrounding what changes will actually be implemented.
However, most expect you’ll be able to have ChatGPT predict your age (age-gating), which will unlock access to an entirely new, sexy, and NSFW side of generative AI.
That likely means “mature” or adult-oriented conversations with AI, being able to ask it to generate text-based adult roleplay scenarios, or even having the AI generate x-rated images or videos based on your prompts.
It also means users will have access to more personality options, like being able to customize tone of voice and AI personas, which helps create a more personalized and realistic experience, both for those using the AI for adult purposes, and for everyday users.
On the other hand, some things will not be changing.
For instance, deepfake pornography will still be prohibited, and so will things like revenge porn, violent or hate-oriented speech, and content involving minors.
All that said, OpenAI has yet to provide exact details on what will and will not be changing.
So if you’re wondering if ChatGPT will be the next sexbot, that remains to be seen.
But what is certain is that OpenAI is taking steps to treat adult users like consenting, age-verified adults.
And that’s something everyone can appreciate.
